You don’t need to give up your beach holiday to see Africa’s big game. This 1-Day Mikumi Fly-In Safari from Zanzibar takes you straight from your hotel to Mikumi National Park and back in a single day, with no long drives and no overnight bags to pack.
We fly you from Zanzibar to Kikoboga Airstrip in around 45 minutes. From there our driver-guide takes over and heads straight for the Mkata Floodplain, the open grassland at the heart of the park where most of the wildlife gathers. Travellers often compare it to the Serengeti, and once you see the herds spread across the plain, you’ll understand why.
Mikumi is Tanzania’s fourth-largest national park, and it sits at the edge of a much bigger picture. The park connects directly to the Selous ecosystem, a protected area of more than 75,000 square kilometres. That connection is why the wildlife here is so dense. On a good day you’ll spot elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest, and Mikumi is one of the more reliable places in Tanzania to find lion resting in the open. The park is also home to over 400 recorded bird species, so keep your camera out even between game sightings.

After a hot lunch in the bush, the afternoon game drive takes you to the park’s hippo pool, where you can watch dozens of hippos wallow at close range. By evening you’re back on your flight to Zanzibar, sand between your toes again before dinner.
This is a full day, and it moves fast, but it fits neatly around a Zanzibar holiday. If you’re staying on the island and want one proper safari day without losing your beach time, this is the tour we build for exactly that. Pair it with our Airport Transfer service for smooth pickup, or ask us about our Tailor-Made Itineraries if you’d rather combine it with more than one day in Mikumi.

Tour Plan
Your day starts early. We pick you up from your hotel in Zanzibar and take you to the airport for a scenic domestic flight to Mikumi National Park, landing at Kikoboga Airstrip roughly 45 minutes later.
Your driver-guide meets you on arrival and briefs you before the first game drive begins. We head into the Mkata Floodplain, the park's wildlife hotspot, tracking elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and giraffe as they move across the open grassland. This is also prime territory for spotting lion, and if you're lucky, the park's resident African wild dogs or the striking sable antelope.

Around midday, we stop for a hot bush lunch before continuing into the afternoon session. The second drive takes you to Mikumi's hippo pool, where you can watch hippos and the occasional crocodile from a safe distance, one of the most photographed spots in the park.
As the afternoon light softens, we drive back to Kikoboga Airstrip for your return flight to Zanzibar. You'll land back on the island with a full day of Tanzania's wildlife behind you, and your evening still ahead.
