If you’ve read about Prison Island’s tortoises and quarantine history and you’re ready to actually go, this Prison Island Day Trip from Stone Town is the straightforward way to book it, just this island, on your schedule, without needing to book a combo tour to somewhere else.

What You Get in a Half Day

The trip covers Changuu Island’s two main draws: its colony of Aldabra giant tortoises, some estimated at close to 190 years old, and the coral-stone ruins of the 19th-century building that gave the island its nickname. For the full story behind both, our Prison Island guide covers the history in depth. Here, we focus on getting you there, through it, and back with time to spare in your day.

Built for Travelers Who Want Just This

Most Prison Island bookings on the island come bundled with a second stop, Nakupenda Sandbank, Stone Town, or a spice farm. That’s a good option if you want a full day out. This one is for travelers who’d rather keep it simple: a focused few hours with the tortoises and the ruins, back at your hotel by early afternoon with the rest of the day still open. If a combo does appeal to you, our Nakupenda Sandbank and Prison Island Tour and Spice Farm, Stone Town and Prison Island itineraries build it into a longer day.
