Explore Tours

The Safari Blue with Snorkeling and Seafood is Zanzibar’s most established full-day boat excursion, sailing a traditional dhow through the Menai Bay Conservation Area on the island’s southwest coast. One departure covers four stops, a coral reef, a hidden sandbank, a mangrove lagoon, and a seafood lunch, all included in a single booking from Fumba village. If you’d rather explore the reef off Zanzibar’s northeast coast instead, our Mnemba Island dolphin and snorkeling tour covers that side of the island.

Menai Bay Snorkeling and Sandbank

Menai Bay is a protected marine reserve home to more than 200 recorded species of fish and coral, according to the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism. Your guide leads a snorkeling session over the reef here, with equipment provided and assistance on hand for first-timers, before the dhow continues to a shallow sandbank exposed by the tide, where you can swim, sunbathe or wade in calm, waist-deep water. Travelers who’d rather pair a sandbank with Prison Island’s tortoises should look at our Nakupenda Sandbank and Prison Island tour on the other coast instead.

What’s for Lunch on Safari Blue?

Lunch on Safari Blue is a Swahili-style seafood buffet served on a small island partway through the route, usually fresh grilled fish, lobster, calamari and prawns with rice, coconut curry and tropical fruit, cooked fresh that morning rather than reheated. Vegetarian options are available with advance notice. For a shorter marine day built around a different kind of seafood stop, our Nakupenda sandbank tour also includes a beach seafood lunch.

Mangrove Lagoon and Dolphin Spotting

After lunch, the dhow glides through a quiet mangrove lagoon, a sheltered ecosystem where birdlife and juvenile marine species gather among the roots. Dolphins sometimes appear in Menai Bay‘s calmer waters during the crossing, though sightings aren’t guaranteed on every trip. If dolphins are the main goal rather than a possible bonus, our Mnemba Island dolphin and snorkeling tour is built specifically around that search.

Fumba Departure and Hotel Pickup

Safari Blue departs from Fumba village, reached by road transfer from your hotel anywhere on the island. For guests without their own pickup arranged, our Zanzibar airport transfers service can also handle the trip out to Fumba on the morning of your tour. For the rest of what to do on the island, see our full Zanzibar tours listing.
