Mnemba Island sits off Zanzibar’s northeast coast, ringed by one of the island’s healthiest coral reefs and protected as part of the Mnemba Marine Conservation Area. The island itself is private, so this Mnemba Island Dolphin & Snorkeling Tour keeps you in the water around it, not on its beach, chasing two things most Zanzibar boat trips don’t combine: a wild dolphin sighting and a genuinely good reef.

Do You Actually See Dolphins?

Bottlenose and, less often, humpback dolphins move along this stretch of coast, especially on morning departures when the water is calmer. We’re honest about this part: they’re wild animals, not a trained show, so a sighting isn’t guaranteed on every trip. What we can promise is a route built around where they’re most often seen, and a crew that watches respectfully rather than chasing or crowding a pod once we find one.

Why Mnemba Atoll Is Zanzibar’s Best Reef

After the dolphin search, the boat anchors near Mnemba Atoll for guided snorkeling. Visibility here regularly runs clearer than closer to the mainland shore, and the reef holds a dense mix of tropical fish, sea stars, sea urchins and coral formations, with the occasional sea turtle passing through. All snorkeling gear is provided, and our guide stays in the water with you to point out what’s worth a closer look.

Getting There From Your Hotel

Departures run from Nungwi, Kendwa or Matemwe, depending on where you’re staying, and we handle hotel pickup either way. If you’re not sure which beach works best for your location, our Zanzibar Airport Transfers team can also help coordinate pickup timing around this tour. Looking to pair it with a land-based day? Our Spice Farm and Jozani Forest Tour makes a good second half of your Zanzibar week, and our full Zanzibar Tours page covers everything else the island offers beyond the water.

Tour Plan

Your day begins with pickup from your hotel, timed to reach the boat launch by mid-morning, the best window for calm seas and dolphin activity. From Nungwi, Kendwa or Matemwe, you board a dhow or speedboat and head out along the northeast coast, scanning the water for dolphin pods as you go.

Once dolphins are spotted, or after a reasonable search window if they're not around that day, the boat continues to Mnemba Atoll. Here you'll spend the main part of the trip snorkeling the reef with a guide, working through several sites around the atoll depending on current and visibility. Between snorkeling sessions, the crew serves fresh fruit and cold drinks on board, and on clear low-tide days, there's a stop at a small sandbank for photos before heading back.

By early afternoon, you're back on shore and transferred to your hotel, salt still drying on your skin.
