Most Tanzania safaris pull you away from the coast for days at a time. This 2-Day Saadani National Park Safari from Zanzibar does the opposite. We fly you across the channel in around twenty minutes, put you on a game drive by mid-morning, and have you back on an island beach the following afternoon.

Saadani National Park is the only wildlife sanctuary in East Africa with an Indian Ocean beachfront. Elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard move through the same landscape where the surf meets the sand, a combination you won’t find anywhere else on the Tanzania safari circuit. If you’ve already looked at our Mikumi fly-in safari, think of Saadani as its coastal cousin: shorter flight, an overnight in the bush, and a beach walk built into the itinerary.

The park sits where the Wami River meets the ocean, and that river is the heart of the experience. On a boat safari through its mangrove-lined banks, you’ll drift past hippo pods, basking crocodiles and some of the more than 400 bird species recorded along the Tanzanian coast, including the mangrove kingfisher and lesser flamingo. Saadani’s beaches are also one of the last major green turtle nesting sites on mainland Tanzania, a detail most visitors never expect from a safari trip.

On the game drives, our driver-guides track across open grassland and coastal woodland where elephant, Masai giraffe, zebra, buffalo and lion are regularly seen, alongside waterbuck, hartebeest and the rare Roosevelt’s sable antelope, found in only a handful of places in East Africa. Between drives, you sleep at a beachfront lodge with the Indian Ocean a short walk from your room, something no inland safari park in Tanzania can offer.

Tour Plan

06:00 - Hotel Pickup in Zanzibar

We collect you from your hotel and transfer you to Zanzibar's Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. If you'd rather arrange this separately, our airport transfer service covers transfer to Stone Town, Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje and Jambiani.

07:30 - Flight to Saadani Airstrip

Board your scheduled flight across the channel to the Tanzanian coast. The flight takes around twenty minutes and gives you a first look at the Wami River delta from the air before you land.

08:15 - Meet Your Driver-Guide

Your driver-guide meets you at the airstrip and briefs you on the day ahead. From here, everything runs on Saadani time, slower and quieter than a typical safari morning.

09:00 - Wami River Boat Safari

Board a small boat and drift along the mangrove-lined Wami River. This is where Saadani earns its reputation — hippo pods surfacing beside the boat, crocodiles sunning on the banks, and birdlife including the mangrove kingfisher and lesser flamingo working the shallows.

12:30 - Lunch at the Lodge

Check in at your beachfront lodge and take lunch with the Indian Ocean in view, a short break before the afternoon drive.

14:30 - Afternoon Game Drive

Head into the park's grassland and coastal woodland for your first game drive. Watch for elephant, Masai giraffe, zebra and buffalo, with a real chance of lion and the rare Roosevelt's sable antelope in the quieter corners of the park.

18:30 - Dinner and Overnight

Return to the lodge as the light fades over the ocean. Dinner is served beachside, and you overnight with the sound of the surf outside your room, something you won't get on a Serengeti or Tarangire safari further inland.

05:45 - Early Morning Game Drive

Set out while the park is still cool, the best window for predator activity. This is your strongest chance at lion, and the open ground makes elephant and giraffe sightings almost guaranteed.

08:30 - Breakfast at the Lodge

Return to the lodge for a full breakfast overlooking the ocean, a well-earned pause after an early start.

09:30 - Free Time on the Beach

Use this window to swim in the Indian Ocean, walk the shoreline where green turtles nest, or simply relax before checkout. It's the one part of a Tanzania safari where the beach is the activity, not an afterthought.

11:30 - Lunch and Check-Out

A final lunch at the lodge before you settle up and your driver-guide transfers you to the airstrip.

13:00 - Flight Back to Zanzibar

Board your return flight to Zanzibar. We meet you on arrival and transfer you back to your hotel, safari done, beach holiday still ahead. If you have more days left on the island, browse our Zanzibar Tours for how to fill them.
