Come with us on a day that pairs Zanzibar’s wildest forest with its most historic streets. Our Jozani Forest & Stone Town Walking Tour combines a guided nature walk through Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, home to the endemic red colobus monkey, with an on-foot exploration of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site shaped by centuries of Swahili, Arab, Indian, and European history.
It’s one of the easiest ways to experience both Zanzibar’s natural side and its cultural core in a single half-day trip, and it slots neatly into any longer Zanzibar tour itinerary.
Jozani Forest & Stone Town Walking Tour Highlights
This tour blends a forest walk with a historic city tour, both led by local guides who know the terrain and the stories behind it.
- Guided nature walk through Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, Zanzibar’s only national park
- Close sightings of the endangered, endemic red colobus monkey
- Mangrove boardwalk trail through coastal forest habitat
- On-foot exploration of Stone Town’s narrow, historic streets
- Visits to the House of Wonders, the Old Slave Market memorial, and Freddie Mercury’s birthplace
- Local guide throughout, sharing real history rather than tourist trivia
Jozani Forest Tour
We start the day at Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, the largest remaining natural forest on the island and home to the Kirk’s red colobus monkey, a species found nowhere else on Earth. A local ranger guides you along a shaded forest trail through coral rag thicket and swamp forest, where the red colobus troops are often visible at close, respectful range moving through the canopy.
Beyond the monkeys, the park shelters Sykes’ monkeys, Ader’s duiker, suni antelope, elephant shrews, chameleons, and rich birdlife, and the walk continues onto a raised mangrove boardwalk, where your guide explains how this ecosystem protects Zanzibar’s coastline and supports local fishing communities. Travelers who’d rather pair this stop with spice plantations instead of a city walk can also look at our Spice Farm and Jozani Forest tour option.
Stone Town City Walking Tour
From Jozani, we drive into Zanzibar’s historic capital for a guided walking tour of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built from centuries of Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian, and European influence. On foot, you’ll wind through narrow, labyrinthine streets lined with carved wooden doors and coral stone buildings, stopping at landmarks like the House of Wonders, the Old Slave Market memorial, and the house where Freddie Mercury was born.
Your guide fills in the real history behind each stop rather than just the tourist headlines, and if you’d like to explore Stone Town in more depth on a separate day, our dedicated Stone Town Walking City Tour covers it at a slower pace. This half-day also combines well with a stop at Prison Island, just a short boat ride from Stone Town’s harbor, if you have extra time.
