Nakupenda means “I love you” in Swahili, and it’s named for a sandbank that isn’t actually there all the time. This stretch of white sand off Stone Town surfaces only at low tide, disappearing back under the Indian Ocean a few hours later. This Nakupenda Sandbank Tour with Snorkeling & Seafood Lunch is timed around that tide, so you catch it at its widest and clearest.

What You’ll Do Once You’re There

The boat ride from Stone Town takes twenty to thirty minutes on a traditional dhow. Once you’re on the sandbank, the shallow water around it holds a healthy patch of coral reef, home to tropical fish, sea stars and sea urchins, easy snorkeling even for beginners since the water rarely gets deep. Between swims, there’s nothing to do but sit on the sand with the ocean on every side, no permanent structures, no crowds, just a strip of white surrounded by turquoise.

The Seafood Lunch Everyone Remembers

Lunch is grilled straight on the sandbank, usually a mix of fresh fish, lobster, prawns and calamari depending on the day’s catch, served with tropical fruit on the side. It’s cooked while you’re still in the water, so it reaches you hot, not reheated from a cooler.

How This Differs From Our Other Boat Tours

If you’d like to add Prison Island’s giant tortoises to the same day, our Nakupenda Sandbank and Prison Island Tour combines both stops, and our standalone Prison Island covers that visit on its own. If snorkeling is really the priority and you’d rather chase dolphins too, our Mnemba Island Dolphin and Snorkeling Tour and Mnemba Aquarium and Sunset Beach trips head further up the coast for a different reef. This trip stays focused on one thing: the sandbank itself, at its best, with lunch that matches it.

Tour Plan

We collect you from your hotel or Stone Town at a time set around that day's low tide, since the sandbank's size and shape shift daily with the water. The boat ride out takes twenty to thirty minutes by traditional dhow, past views of the Stone Town skyline and passing fishing boats along the way.

Once you arrive, you're free to swim, snorkel or simply sit on the sand. Snorkeling gear is provided, and your guide points you toward the healthiest coral patches nearby, where sea stars and reef fish are easiest to spot in the shallow water. While you're in the water, the crew starts grilling lunch, fresh seafood and fruit, ready by early afternoon.

After lunch, there's more free time to swim or relax before the tide starts to turn and the sandbank begins shrinking back into the sea. The boat brings you back to Stone Town or your hotel by mid to late afternoon.
